Biography
John A. Elliott is currently the Dean of the UConn School of Business as well as Auran J. Fox Chair in Business. He was most recently the Dean at the Zicklin School of Business at Baruch College, which is part of the City University of New York (CUNY), Vice President of Baruch College, and the Irwin and Arlene Ettinger Professor of Accountancy.
Dean Elliott received his BS and MBA degrees from the University of Maryland and his PhD degree from Cornell University. Prior to accepting the Deanship at the Zicklin School, he spent 20 years on the faculty at Cornell University’s Johnson Graduate School of Management, most recently as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. Dean Elliott is a certified public accountant with professional experience as an auditor and consultant for Arthur Andersen & Co. and in the controller’s office of the Westinghouse Defense and Space Center.
During his career in academia, Dean Elliott’s teaching responsibilities have included financial accounting, intermediate accounting, financial statement analysis, taxation and extensive executive teaching. His research is concentrated on the role of accounting information in financial analysis and contracts. Dean Elliott’s academic publications have appeared in the Accounting Review; the Journal of Accounting Research; Accounting Horizons; Auditing: A Journal of Practice & Theory; and The Rand Journal among others. In 2004, his paper on earnings management (with Nelson and Tarpley) received the Notable Contributions to Accounting Literature Award from the American Accounting Association and also the Wildman Medal. His co-authored textbook, Introduction to Financial Accounting, is now available in its 11th edition. He currently serves on the Boards of Directors of National Financial Partners (NFP), a publicly traded NYSE listed company, and of Liquidnet, a private company.
He was the founding President of the Financial Accounting and Reporting Section of the American Accounting Association (AAA) and served on the AAA Financial Accounting Standards Committee, which responds to FASB exposure drafts and requests for comment on developing accounting issues and practices. He previously served on the Board of Directors of the Graduate Management Admissions Council (GMAC); of the Hangar Theatre and the Cayuga Medical Center in Ithaca, N.Y.; and of Neuberger Berman prior to its acquisition by Lehman Brothers.
