Online public schools are just like traditional schools in the sense that they:

  • Do not charge tuition *
  • Serve students in grades kindergarten through twelve
  • Follow state requirements for standards and assessments
  • Result in a high school diploma upon completion

Where online schooling differs from traditional school is in that:

  • Students receive an individualized education and personalized, one-to-one support.
  • Classes do not take place in a building but rather at home, on the road, or wherever an Internet connection can be found.
  • Parents and students communicate with their teacher via online classrooms, e-mail, and phone, (but also sometimes in person).
  • These schools are full time, and follow a traditional school year. You can expect that your child will spend 5 to 6 hours per day on coursework and homework. But students are not always in front of a computer—they also work on offline activities, worksheets, and projects as part of the school day.

Our program works for families who want well-rounded, academically successful children. Our students are responding with higher achievement and are excited to learn. Many graduates have gone on to colleges and universities across the nation.

Online public schools also include:

  • An Individualized Learning Plan
  • School materials delivered to your doorstep, including textbooks, workbooks, and hands-on materials
  • One-to-one support by school staff to help you be successful
  • Access to a variety of student activities such as online clubs and student contests, and parent support

Five K12 School Models

There are five types of online public schools powered by K12: Virtual Academies; Insight Schools; blended schools, including K12 Flex Academies; Destinations Career Academies; and District-Run Schools. The schools available to your child will depend on the state in which you reside.

Virtual Academies

These are state-wide, online public schools available in dozens of states and D.C., offering the full K12 program and methodology including the award-winning curriculum, instruction from state-credentialed teachers and strong parent and student support to help your child reach their full potential.

Insight Schools

At Insight Schools, we work with students and their families to help them overcome obstacles with a unique and highly supportive approach. Our experienced teachers and counselors inspire students to work hard and help them succeed.

Blended Schools and Flex Academies

Blended schools such as the Flex Academies have an onsite location that students attend five days a week where they use the K12 program and curriculum. The schools are full-time public schools that combine the best of online education with a traditional setting. Currently, we have blended schools in California, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Minnesota.

Destinations Career Academies

Destinations Career Academies and Destinations Career Programs give students an education that prepares them to be workforce-ready and college-ready. Rich courses and extracurricular experiences provide relevant opportunities for students to demonstrate their understanding of real-world applications.

Within these career fields such as Information Technology and Health Sciences, students can earn multiple certifications that will enable them to gain on-the-job experience in their career of choice while attending college.

District-Run Schools

K12 works with many school districts to offer full-time online schooling programs that use the K12 and/or Fuel Education curriculum. K12 provides district-run programs with curriculum, the online school learning platform, and various levels of support. Students study at home, but may also be eligible to participate in local district-sponsored sports and extracurricular activities.

Who Attends Online Public Schools?

There are many types of students who thrive and are successful in online public schools powered by K12:

  • Middle and high schoolers interested in getting a head start on their college education
  • Military families wanting consistency in their child’s education despite frequent relocation
  • Athletes, musicians, and students pursuing their dreams while in school
  • Those homebound or undergoing medical treatments who want to continue with their public school education
  • Students needing more support academically and are determined to succeed
  • Families who want to be more involved in their child’s schooling
