The Warwick MBA takes three years with seven core modules, six elective modules and a dissertation required. Mr Pye said it takes at least 15 hours' study a week. "It is not an easy option by any means, " he said. "The course is flexible but it is not easy."

Students have to visit Warwick twice in the first year and for three to four days in the second. The fees are currently around £7, 500 per year and most students pay their own. Financial Times rankings show that a Warwick MBA boosts graduates' salary by around 32 per cent.

And, said Mr Pye, there is a distinct advantage to studying for an MBA via distance learning.

"It gives you a brand new skill: that is, managing a virtual team. Students are split into teams for group assignments and the skill of managing a remote team where you may have little if any face to face contact with members is such an important tool in today's business world, " he noted.

Another long-established course is offered by Edinburgh Business School, run by Heriot-Watt University. It started 20 years ago and today has around 11, 500 students worldwide. Students must pass nine courses taking around 200 hours of study each – the cost for each course is £1, 000 for those in the developed world, a subsidised £550 for those from emerging economies.

Mr Kitchin said the EBS MBA differs from others in that it was created specifically as a distance learning course, not adapted from a traditional one.

The distance learning MBA offered by Bradford University School of Management is another course with a long history. The course costs £13, 500 and takes between two and six years to complete. There are students from 50 plus countries "from the Arctic circle to Mauritania, " said Jonathan Muir, director of studies for distance learning.

He added: "We allow students to take up to six years as we appreciate that students on the distance learning MBA may be juggling many commitments such as career, family and social lives."

According to the recent distance learning MBA rankings, Bradford was ranked first in career progression terms "with students on average experiencing a 30 per cent increase in their salaries post-graduation, " said Dr Muir.

One of the newest courses is offered by Leeds Business School, which is part of Leeds Metropolitan University. Its Executive MBA online has been on offer for less than two years. The course costs £9, 500, payable over three years.

Senior lecturer Marie Kerr said: "Students need to have completed modules worth 180 credit points to achieve the MBA, which by distance learning is usually completed over three years."

She added: "We have expats based in Spain, Bahrain and Australia on the course and have some students in Africa. Students choose to study with us, I believe, due to the value we offer in terms of price, quality and flexibility.

"Throughout the course, students develop practical skills and techniques that will enhance performance from day one – such as presenting a case to senior colleagues, negotiating skills, critical thinking, problem solving, decision making, numeracy and research and evaluation skills."

Seoposengwe Galeeme from Botswana is currently studying for the Leeds Metropolitan University online executive MBA course.

He works as an IT analyst for a diamond company, and said: "The MBA offers a flexible schedule that fits nicely with my work and family life – and despite the birth of my daughter I haven't missed a class.
